ENT surgeon

An ENT surgeon is a highly trained professional who deals with a wide range of conditions related to the ear, nose and throat. Some ENT surgeons treat conditions related to the head and neck and may perform plastic surgery as well.

This is a complex yet fascinating surgical speciality which requires a high level of skill and expertise. ENT conditions affect all ages, from newborn babies through to elderly people which is part of its appeal. But it also requires a particular skill set on the part of the surgeon, not least, communication skills.

The reason for this is that ENT problems are related to communication, e.g. speech, hearing and language. This is a fundamental part of being human and as a result, any problems with this cause a great deal of distress.

So the ENT surgeon needs to be aware of this and act with tact and sensitivity.

Examples of ENT surgery include:

  • Removal of tonsils and adenoids
  • Head and neck cancers
  • Cochlear implants
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Mastoid surgery (ear)
  • Removal of polyps on vocal cords

Most ENT surgeons specialise in a particular area, for example, throat conditions such as throat polyps.
